Updated on

Have you ever found yourself scrolling on Facebook and thinking, “There’s got to be more to this app”?

I had one of those curious moments not too long ago, and I ended up diving headfirst into Facebook’s lesser-known features.

What I found was surprisingly useful, sometimes even a little mind-blowing!

Facebook is not just a place to check updates and watch videos on repeat. It’s packed with tools that help you manage your privacy, organize your content, and even protect your digital legacy.

The best part? Most people have no clue these features even exist.

So, if you're ready to unlock a whole new level of Facebook magic, let me take you on a little tour.

These are seven Facebook hidden features that I bet you didn’t know about—but definitely need in your life.

1. Customize Your News Feed (Bye, Annoying Posts!)

We all have that one Facebook friend who posts 30 selfies a day or shares nonstop drama.

It clutters up your feed and honestly, it’s exhausting.

But here’s the good news: Facebook lets you fine-tune your feed so you only see the stuff that really matters to you.

Go to Settings & Privacy > Content Preferences.

Facebook Settings

Here, you can prioritize who to see first by clicking on Unfollow People. You can unfollow without unfriending them, and Reconnect with people you haven’t seen posts from in a while.

Facebook Content Preference Settings

You can even manage your Pages and groups so your feed shows more of what you actually enjoy.

After I did this, my Facebook became so much calmer and more positive.

I started seeing more posts from my favorite creators and less clutter from people I don’t even talk to anymore.

It’s like giving your Facebook a little mental health makeover—and I’m here for it.

2. Download All Your Facebook Data

If you’ve ever been curious about your complete Facebook history, there’s a way to download it all.

I’m talking every photo, message, comment, like, and even the ads you’ve interacted with. When I tried this, I ended up going down memory lane and found stuff I totally forgot about!

To do this, go to Settings & Privacy like you did before, and then go to Settings.

Facebook Personal Information Setting

Then go to Personal Details > Your Information and Permission > Download Your Information. You can choose a time range, select specific types of data (like messages or posts), and download it as a ZIP file.

Facebook Download Your Information Settings

Facebook will email you when the file is ready.

If you can’t find this option, you can just type Download Your Information on the search bar and it will show up.

This feature is perfect if you’re thinking of switching platforms, cleaning up your digital life, or just want to see what Facebook has collected over the years.

It’s also a great backup if you’re planning to delete your account but still want to keep your memories.

Just don’t be shocked by what you find in those old messages!

3. See Who’s Snooping on Your Account

This one made my jaw drop.

Did you know Facebook lets you see where your account is logged in? You can actually track every single device and location that has access to your Facebook profile—yes, even that random tablet you forgot to log out of months ago!

To find it, go to Settings & Privacy like you did before, and then go to Settings.

Facebook Password Settings

Then go to Password and Security and then click on Password and Security and then Where You’re Logged In as you can see in the image.

Facebook Where You Are Logged In

Here you'll see a list of active sessions including location, device type, and browser used.

You can click the three dots next to each session to log it out immediately if something doesn’t look familiar.

This is a powerful little security tool that gives me peace of mind. I found an old session from my cousin's laptop that I forgot to log out from!

Now, I check this list regularly, just to make sure my digital doors are locked and nobody’s snooping around.

4. Save Posts for Later (Your Personal Pinterest)

Ever seen something on Facebook that made you say “I need to remember this,” and then completely forgot where you saw it?

I’ve done that more times than I can count. But then I found the Save Post feature, and now I use it almost every day.

It’s super simple: just tap the three dots in the top right corner of any post, then select Save Post.

Facebook Save Post

Later, you can find everything you’ve saved by going to Menu > Saved and the best part is you can organize them into collections like “Recipes,” “Home Ideas,” “Business Tips,” or even “Future Vacay Plans.”

Facebook Saved Post

Now, instead of digging through my timeline or trying to remember which friend shared what, I just hit Save and keep things neatly tucked away.

It turned Facebook into my personal idea board.

Honestly, this feature alone made me fall in love with Facebook all over again!

5. Send Yourself a Secret Note with “Only Me” Posts

I stumbled across this hack by accident, and now I use it like my own secret diary.

You can write posts and set the privacy to Only Me so no one else can see them.

It’s perfect for jotting down private thoughts, affirmations, to-do lists, or even random creative ideas.

Facebook Only Me Post

Just go to your home feed, create a post like you normally would, and tap the audience selector (usually says "Friends" or "Public").

Change it to Only Me and hit post. Voilà—only you will ever see it on your timeline, but you can still edit or delete it anytime.

Facebook Post Audience

Sometimes I use it to leave myself little pep talks when I’m feeling off, or to track progress on my goals.

It's a surprisingly therapeutic way to use a social platform. Plus, it’s all in one place—no need for a separate journaling app.

6. Create a Legacy Contact (Prepare for the Unexpected)

Okay, this one gets a little deep, but it’s super important.

Facebook allows you to assign a Legacy Contact, which is someone you trust to manage your profile if something ever happens to you.

They can post tributes, respond to friend requests, and even download your shared content.

To set this up, go to Settings & Privacy like you did before, and then go to Settings.

Then go to Personal Details and click on the Personal Details tab where you can see informations about the account.

Facebook Personal Details Settings

One the Personal Details tab, click on the Account Ownership and Control. It will show the Memorialization option. From there, you can choose a friend or family member to act as your Legacy Contact.

You can also decide if you’d prefer your account to be deleted after death—it’s entirely up to you.

Facebook Memorialization Setting

When I first found this feature, I hesitated because, well, it’s not something we like to think about.

But after setting it up, I felt a sense of peace.

It’s a small step that shows you care about how your digital presence will be handled—and that’s pretty powerful.

7. Hidden Message Requests Folder

You’ve probably missed a message or two—and no, it wasn’t your fault.

Facebook filters messages from non-friends into a hidden folder called Message Requests, and even further into Spam.

When I finally checked mine, I found old job inquiries, messages from long-lost classmates, and a few... let’s just say, questionable texts.

Facebook Message Request Settings

To access it, open Messenger > Tap your profile photo > Message Requests. You’ll see two tabs: You May Know and Spam. Make it a habit to check both folders occasionally—you never know what might be waiting there!

This inbox is like a secret drawer. Sometimes it’s just junk, but sometimes it’s a golden opportunity or an important message you missed.

It's one of those Facebook things that everyone should know about but almost no one does.

Wrap Up: There's More to Facebook Than Meets the Eye

Who would’ve thought Facebook had so many clever, powerful features hiding in plain sight?

I felt like I’d found a hidden menu at my favorite restaurant. Once you know where to look, you realize how much more you can do on the platform beyond the usual likes and comments.

From tightening your security to saving inspiration or protecting your legacy, these tools are total game-changers.

Take a few minutes today to explore them—you’ll feel more in control, more organized, and more connected. Facebook just got a whole lot smarter.
